FAQ: Why use Pressfolios over WordPress and other website builders?

Unlike WordPress and similar platforms for building a website, Pressfolios is developing a full suite of tools for managing your stories and personal brand. We have designed Pressfolios as a system that serves as a personal repository, a cloud backup service and a website builder all wrapped into one.

Personal repository: We’ve invested a great deal of thought and energy to build an intelligent and intuitive content management system designed specifically for journalists. With Pressfolios, you can easily keep track hundreds of clips - all from one centralized location where you have full control.

Need to find the name of a source from story you wrote two years ago? No problem. We’ve built the Pressfolios repository system so that you can filter, sort and search through your entire body of work without breaking a sweat.

Cloud backup: Whether we like it or not, links have a shelf life. Anyone who has been in the business long enough knows that stories disappear. Sometimes it’s because a news organization goes under; sometimes it’s due to database changes; and sometimes links just expire for no apparent reason.

With Pressfolios, every time you add a link to your repository, we automatically clip a full PDF version for you so that every story is safely stored on our servers and always close at hand.

Website builder: Unlike WordPress and certain other platforms available today, Pressfolios requires absolutely no technical experience to build a beautiful online portfolio for your clips. Updating a Pressfolio takes almost no time at all, and we’re continuously developing new layouts and customization options.

Most importantly, Pressfolios is built to meet the specific needs of journalists - not the general public. WordPress may power millions of websites worldwide, but we can pretty much guarantee they will provide the exact same value to journalists tomorrow as they do today.

At Pressfolios, we’re on a mission to help you take control of your work and personal brand as a journalist, and we’re driving the ball forward every day.

Pressfolios: Open Access For Student Journalists

Starting out on a career path is no trivial feat, especially for aspiring journalists jockeying for position in an industry flush with competition and constantly in flux.

“It’s really important for young journalists to take control of their personal brand early. Even before they get a job in the business, they have lots of opportunities to do journalism and showcase their work. I always urge students to buy their domain name NOW and find a good portfolio site so they can distinguish themselves as they reach out to prospective employers.”

Robin J Phillips, Digital Director
Reynolds Center for Business Journalism at Arizona State University

Pressfolios helps journalists build, manage and backup their online portfolio of clips. We make sure journalists never lose stories to inactive links and we make it easy to build a beautiful website - no coding required.

Here are a few examples:

- Freelancer (GQ, Esquire, The Atlantic): Alex Hannaford
- Freelancer (The New York Times): Amy Schoenfeld
- Columnist, Rolling Stone SA: Chris Rodrigues

To help the next generation of journalists get a leg up, Pressfolios will now offer open access to all colleges and universities who wish to help their students build a better portfolio.

Pressfolios is currently in private beta. Creating a custom access code will allow your students to bypass our waitlist and get started on their Pressfolio before the semester ends. Students signing up with custom codes will also be given special access to new features as we continue to expand.

To create a custom access code for your school, email us at hello@pressfolios.com and we’ll get you all set up.

Pressfolio Relaunches With New Look, Added Features

We’ve written about building beautiful online portfolios and Pressfolios before. But today they are launching a completely re-hauled and re-imagined site. And I’m already pretty obsessed with it.

Pressfolios is relaunching as a single page portfolio site which means it’s going to look just as good on your tablet as on your desktop. And somehow, even my lamest clips look worth reading on my site.

Digital portfolios for journalists: What are your options?

Until recently, many journalists built their own sites to highlight and promote their work.

Now platforms like Pressfolios, Muck Rack, Clippings.me and Contently offer turnkey solutions. But do they offer a substantial enough advantage to justify the time required to compile, archive, digitize, organize, optimize, connect, upload and then maintain an anthology of brand-consistent clips, feature stories and — in some cases — multimedia work on yet another social platform?

FAQ: Does Pressfolios work for multimedia journalists?

Although we currently do not provide direct hosting for audio or video clips, many multimedia journalists use Pressfolios by linking out to their multimedia content that is hosted on other sites, such as soundcloud, audioboo, youtube, vimeo and other media hosting providers.

When adding multimedia clips to your pressfolio, simply “Add via URL” using the external links to your hosted content.

As we continue to develop Pressfolios beyond our beta phase, we will be adding options for hosting and in-line display of multimedia content right inside our application.

Meet The All-New Pressfolios

Pressfolios helps journalists build, manage and backup an online portfolio of their clips. From day-one of our initial beta launch in May 2012, interest outpaced our wildest expectations - and it hasn’t let up since.

Today, we are thrilled to introduce the all-new Pressfolios. With the help of amazing early beta testers, we have redesigned and redeveloped our entire application from top to bottom.

Here’s an inside look:

Your Pressfolio

Optimized for the web and mobile, we have redesigned Pressfolios as a single, responsive page with three main sections: Snapshot, Stories, and About You.

Snapshot:

Your snapshot is what appears “above the fold” when someone arrives at your Pressfolio. As billed, it’s a quick “snapshot” of who you are and an introduction to your work. You can even choose your own custom cover image to personalize your Pressfolio.

New Changes to Pressfolios: Here’s What You Need to Know

Out with the old, in with the new. Here are the changes with today’s release of the all-new Pressfolios:

Complete Pressfolio Design Overhaul

image

The first change you’ll probably notice is a complete design overhaul of the public-facing Pressfolio pages (i.e. your portfolio). To better optimize for web and mobile viewing, we have redesigned the Pressfolio as a single page. To allow for greater personalization, you can now upload a custom cover photo for your Pressfolio.

Improved portfolio design and customization options are a key focus as we continue to develop Pressfolios. More personalization, layout and theme options are on the way.

Here are a few great examples of new Pressfolios:

- Rolling Stone SA Columnist: Chris Rodrigues

- Feature Writer: Alex Hannaford

- Writer & Editor: Chris Silva

- Freelancer: Amy Schoenfeld

- NBCNews.com News Editor: Megan Friedman
